Southern Brown Kiwi

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Leopold Joseph Fitzinger's multi-volume work, Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte der Vögel in ihren sämmtlichen Hauptformen published in Vienna in 1864.

The atlas serves as the dedicated visual companion to the bird section of his broader textbook series, Wissenschaftlich-populäre Naturgeschichte. Within the visual collection, this bird atlas constitutes the second installment of a five-part series of atlases that systematically cataloged mammals, birds, amphibians, and fishes. The 1864 atlas relies on plates printed by the Imperial-Royal Court and State Printing Office (k.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei) in Vienna to illustrate the classifications established in those corresponding text volumes. The atlas centers on its extensive series of color lithographic plates, which illustrate each bird species in detail. This illustration depicts a Southern Brown Kiwi (Apteryx australis), a flightless bird native to New Zealand. The print features the German caption "Der langschnäblige Kiwi" (the long-billed kiwi) alongside its scientific classification, and details the bird's unique physical characteristics, showcasing its coarse, hair-like brown plumage, stout legs, and long, slender beak adapted for probing the forest floor for food.
