Decorated Nautilus Shell III
Fine-art print based on the original from the "Shells from the collection of the Dukes of Württemberg", a celebrated series of natural history illustrations painted around the late 18th century by the German artist Johann Gustav Hoch (1716–1779).
The collection consists of dozens of highly detailed watercolor, gouache, and ink plates depicting a wide variety of marine life—most notably an extensive cataloging of cowrie shells (Cypraeidae). Rendered with precise scientific accuracy and vibrant aesthetics typical of early malacological studies, these drawings served both as a scientific record and as artistic documentation of the exotic treasures kept in the ducal Wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities.
