Eurasian Magpie

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Naturgeschichte der Vögel Deutschlands, a multi-volume ornithological treatise published in Nuremberg between 1805 and 1821 by the prominent German naturalist Johann Wolf and the physician-ornithologist Bernhard Meyer. Considered one of the most luxurious and scientifically significant works on Central European avifauna from the early 19th century, the bilingual (German and French) publication is celebrated for its extraordinary emphasis on lifelike accuracy and anatomical precision.

The expansive folio features over 170 stunning plates primarily engraved by master artists like Johann Carl Bock and Ambrosius Gabler, who utilized intricate copperplate engraving techniques finished with vibrant, highly detailed hand-applied watercolor. Today, complete original sets are exceedingly rare and highly coveted on the antiquarian book market, serving as a vital historical bridge that moved bird illustration away from stiff, stylized poses toward rigorous, empirical observation.

This print depicts a male Eurasian Magpie (Pica pica) labeled as Corvus Pica, Linn. under Carl Linnaeus's early classification, alongside its traditional German name, Die Elster, Mas. (The Magpie, Male).
