Hawkmoth II

Fine art print based on an original drawing of a Spurge Hawkmoth (Plate 25) by Joris Hoefnagel.

Hoefnagel was a prominent Flemish painter, miniaturist, and Renaissance polymath whose detailed work bridged the worlds of fine art and early scientific inquiry. Born in Antwerp to a wealthy diamond merchant family, he fled his home city after it was plundered during the Spanish Fury of 1576, eventually finding high-profile employment at European royal courts, including that of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. Hoefnagel is widely celebrated as one of the last great manuscript illuminators and a pioneer of the floral still-life genre, guided by his personal motto, "natura sola magistra" (nature is the only master). His masterwork, The Four Elements, features roughly 300 breathtaking watercolor miniatures of animals and insects executed with unprecedented mathematical precision and realistic shadow calibration. Generations before the invention of the microscope or the formal establishment of entomology, Hoefnagel's brilliant proto-scientific observations—such as his collaborative print series Archetypa—fundamentally transformed how the Western world observed and documented the intricacies of the natural world
