ZigZag-Sepal Masdevallia Orchid

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Friedrich Carl Lehmann’s The Genus Masdavellia, published in London between 1890 and 1896.

Lehmann is best remembered in orchidology for his vital contributions to this book, a landmark botanical monograph published in the late 1800s. Commissioned by the Marquess of Lothian, the book was illustrated and authored by British artist Florence Woolward. Serving as the primary field authority, Lehmann supplied Woolward with live orchid specimens, watercolor sketches, and highly detailed natural habitat notes from the Andes. Woolward openly praised Lehmann in the book's foreword, placing him "at the head of the authorities upon the genus" due to his unparalleled knowledge of Central and South American cloud forests.

Masdevallia fractiflexa is a fascinating, miniature-sized epiphytic orchid celebrated for its highly unusual, bent flower stems. First described by Friedrich Carl Lehmann and Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Kraenzlin in 1894, the species name fractiflexa directly translates to "brokenly bent," highlighting the characteristic zigzag structure of its inflorescence.
