Black Cicada – Cryptotympana atrata
Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Edward Donovan’s An Epitome of the Natural History of the Insects of China, published in 1798 in London.
It depicts one of the most famous and culturally significant cicada species in East Asia. The males produce an exceptionally loud, rhythmic, high-pitched buzzing song using abdominal membranes called tymbals. This piercing drone is considered the definitive background soundtrack to summer afternoons in Asian urban parks and forests.
