Jararaca or Yarará Pit Viper - Bothrops jararaca

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Leopold Fitzinger’s Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte, published in Vienna between 1860 and 1864.

The massive series was compiled by the renowned Austrian zoologist Leopold Fitzinger (1802–1884) and printed by the prestigious Kaiserlich-Königliche Hof- und Staatsdruckerei. The atlas is globally celebrated among historians and biologists for its hundreds of highly detailed, hand-colored lithographs that systematically mapped the biodiversity of vertebrate animals.

The Plate depicts a highly venomous pit viper species endemic to South America, primarily found in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. Commonly known simply as the jararaca or yarará, it is one of the most abundant and medically significant causes of dangerous snakebites within its geographic range. It typically grows to about 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length and features an olive-brown or grayish-brown body pattern intricately covered with dark brown, trapdoor-like blotches.
