Mexican Crocodile

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Volume VI of the  Archives du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, an eminent French scientific journal published in Paris in 1852 by the National Museum of Natural History. This specific volume contains Auguste Henri André Duméril's work, Description des reptiles nouveaux ou imparfaitement connus, providing detailed anatomical descriptions and taxonomic revisions of various reptile species.  The publication features precise scientific lithographs of creatures like chameleons and crocodiles based on National Museum of Natural History collections.

This illustration depicts Morelet's or Mexican crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii). Native primarily to the Atlantic lowlands of Central America—including the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, and northern Guatemala—this medium-sized crocodile typically reaches lengths between 1.5 and 3 meters. It is a freshwater species that favors secluded, forested wetlands like marshes, swamps, and lagoons, where adults utilize their distinctively broad, blunt snouts to hunt opportunistic prey ranging from fish and turtles to waterbirds and small mammals.
