Giclee reprint of an original drawing from the groundbreaking masterwork Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname). First published in Amsterdam in 1705, this volume was researched, written, and originally drawn by the pioneering German naturalist, entomologist, and botanical artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717).

Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the first scientists to empirically observe and record live insect metamorphosis. At a time when popular consensus believed insects spontaneously generated from mud, Merian sold her belongings and embarked on a perilous, self-funded scientific expedition to the Dutch colony of Suriname in 1699 alongside her daughter. Her resulting 1705 masterwork, containing 60 massive engraved plates, fundamentally transformed the fields of entomology and botanical illustration by proving that plants and insects share an interconnected, codependent life cycle.

The large, dark-patterned butterfly depicted in mid-flight on the upper right (and resting just below it) is the adult Dido Longwing (Philaethria dido) a striking neotropical butterfly renowned for its elegant, narrow forewings and a brilliant color palette against a velvety black background. Native to the dense rainforest canopies stretching from Central America down to the Amazon Basin, this agile flier spends most of its life high in the treetops, only descending to ground level to lay eggs or mud-puddle for essential minerals. Its biology is deeply intertwined with passionflower vines; by feeding exclusively on these toxic plants during its spiky caterpillar stage, the butterfly sequesters defensive chemicals that make it highly unpalatable to birds, granting it lifelong protection against predators.
