Utrecht 1695
Created in 1695, this remarkable bird’s-eye plan presents Utrecht in extraordinary detail at the close of the 17th century. The city is surrounded by its fortifications, gardens and waterways, while a numbered key identifies 93 locations. The elaborate cartouches turn the map into more than a practical city plan:
42 family coats of arms represent members of Utrecht’s civic council, alongside allegorical figures and the arms of the city and province.
