Hokkei - It's good to wear new clothes

Giclee reprint of the  original print titled Kisōhajime yoshi (ca. 1820's)by Totoya Hokkei.

“Kisōhajime yoshi” is a classical phrase traditionally found in Japanese almanacs (Rekisho), denoting an auspicious day specifically designated for wearing new clothing for the first time.

The concept gained prominent cultural recognition through Edo-period art, most notably in this famous 1820 surimono woodblock print created for the Hanazono poetry group.
Totoya Hokkei’s surimono woodblock print, Kisōhajimeyoshi ("It is Good to Wear New Clothes"), brilliantly captures the cultural intersection of Japanese folk belief, fashion, and poetry in the early 1820s.

The deluxe, privately commissioned print illustrates a woman preparing to don a pristine, elegantly patterned kimono, symbolizing renewal and clean beginnings. The artwork features a distinctive red cartouche designed to look like a page from a traditional Japanese almanac (Rekisho), which historically dictated the most auspicious days for daily tasks.

By pairing this visual reference with clever kyōka (witty poetry) that celebrates the act of wearing new garments at the turn of the season, Hokkei elevates a simple domestic ritual into a profound, spiritually charged celebration of the New Year.
