Palm Cockatoo

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Volume 1 of La Galerie des Oiseaux (originally titled Galerie des oiseaux du Cabinet d'histoire naturelle du Jardin du Roi), published sequentially by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in Paris between 1820 and 1826.

It is another magnificent, highly influential 19th-century ornithological masterpiece authored by Vieillot. It served as a monumental illustrated guide to the vast avian collection housed at the French Royal Menagerie and Natural History Museum.

Commonly known as the Palm Cockatoo (or historically as the Goliath Aratoo / Great Black Cockatoo), the depicted bird is one of the most magnificent, distinctively prehistoric-looking parrots in the world. In 19th-century ornithology, naturalists like John Gould and Edward Lear categorized this bird under the genus Microglossus (meaning "small tongue").

None-the-less, they possess the largest beak of any parrot relative to their body size, surpassed globally only by the Hyacinth Macaw. The upper and lower mandibles do not completely close, leaving a gap that allows them to hold and saw through incredibly hard timber seeds—such as Canarium nuts—that no other animal can crack.
