Greater Vasa Parrot
Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Histoire naturelle des perroquets written by François Levaillant and illustrated by Jacques Barraband. This landmark work published between 1801 and 1805 stand as a pinnacle of ornithological art, combining meticulous scientific accuracy with the highest caliber of French printing craftsmanship.
Barraband created over 130 lifelike watercolors, which were transformed into stunning prints through an advanced stipple-engraving technique executed by the master artisan Langlois. By applying multiple inks simultaneously to a single copperplate (à la poupée) and finishing each plate by hand with delicate watercolor washes, the creators achieved an unprecedented three-dimensional texture that captured the vibrant, iridescent quality of tropical plumage. This artistic and technical triumph was so highly regarded in its day that Napoleon Bonaparte personally commissioned deluxe, lavishly bound editions of the work to use as prized diplomatic gifts for foreign dignitaries and scientists, cementing Barraband’s legacy as one of the greatest bird illustrators in history.
This print depicts the Greater Vasa Parrot (Coracopsis vasa), natively known as Le Grand Vaza, an extraordinary parrot endemic to the tropical forests and open woodlands of Madagascar and the Comoros. Drastically differing from typical brightly colored parrots, it sports a distinctive drab, brownish-gray to charcoal-black plumage and a unique, elongated raptor-like silhouette in flight. Vasa parrots possess several remarkable biological traits that fascinate scientists, including an exceptionally short incubation period of just 18 days, a highly unusual cooperative polyandrous mating system where females dominate multiple males, and the ability to dynamically change skin color—becoming completely bald and bright orange on their heads during the breeding season.
