Lovely Masdevallia Orchid

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Friedrich Carl Lehmann’s The Genus Masdavellia, published in London between 1890 and 1896.

Lehmann is best remembered in orchidology for his vital contributions to this book, a landmark botanical monograph published in the late 1800s. Commissioned by the Marquess of Lothian, the book was illustrated and authored by British artist Florence Woolward. Serving as the primary field authority, Lehmann supplied Woolward with live orchid specimens, watercolor sketches, and highly detailed natural habitat notes from the Andes. Woolward openly praised Lehmann in the book's foreword, placing him "at the head of the authorities upon the genus" due to his unparalleled knowledge of Central and South American cloud forests.

Masdevallia amabilis is a compact, cool-growing species orchid native to the high-altitude montane forests and rocky slopes of Peru. Celebrated for its striking, tubular flowers formed by three prominent fused sepals, this miniature orchid blooms successively and is highly prized by collectors for small growing spaces
