Buffy-Headed Capuchin Monkey
Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Simiarum et Vespertilionum Brasiliensium Species Novae by Johann Baptist von Spix in 1823.
Johann Baptist von Spix was a visionary Bavarian scientist. King Maximilian Joseph I of Bavaria funded Spix and botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius to execute a historic exploration of Brazil between 1817 and 1820. They traversed nearly 14,000 kilometers of the Amazon basin, bringing back thousands of specimens. Published in Munich, this folio-sized work was the official scientific catalog documenting the newly discovered primates and bats from that expedition. It is considered one of the most famous, historically significant works ever produced on South American mammals. The vivid, highly-detailed illustrations were drawn by elite European wildlife artists, including Karl Joseph Brodtmann. They were captured on stone using fine lithography and subsequently hand-colored with watercolors to reproduce the precise texture of the animal's fur.
