The monumental publication features over 300 exquisite plates, mostly drawn from nature by Oudart. These illustrations were produced using fine line engraving or lithography and finished with meticulous, vibrant hand-applied watercolor. Highly prized in the rare book and antiquarian print market today, Vieillot's Galerie stands alongside the works of Audubon and Gould as a masterwork of 19th-century scientific illustration, perfectly marrying artistic beauty with rigorous empirical observation.

This plate is inscribed "Le Savacou huppé / Cancroma cochlearia", which is known in modern ornithology as the Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius). The historical genus name Cancroma and the French "Savacou" refer to its distinctively wide, scoop-like bill resembling an overturned boat.
