The atlas is globally celebrated among historians and biologists for its hundreds of highly detailed, hand-colored lithographs that systematically mapped the biodiversity of vertebrate animals.

This hand-colored plate features "Die gemeine Caouan-Schildkröte", which is the historic classification (Thalassochelys caonana) for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta). This massive marine reptile is easily recognized by its large head and powerful jaws, which it uses to crush hard-shelled prey like crabs, whelks, and clams. Found in temperate and tropical oceans worldwide, these turtles spend almost their entire lives at sea, with females returning to land only to nest on sandy beaches. They are highly migratory, frequently crossing entire ocean basins, and are currently classified as vulnerable due to threats like marine pollution, habitat loss, and accidental capture in commercial fishing gear.
