First published in Amsterdam in 1705, this volume was researched, written, and originally drawn by the pioneering German naturalist, entomologist, and botanical artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717).

Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the first scientists to empirically observe and record live insect metamorphosis. At a time when popular consensus believed insects spontaneously generated from mud, Merian sold her belongings and embarked on a perilous, self-funded scientific expedition to the Dutch colony of Suriname in 1699 alongside her daughter. Her resulting 1705 masterwork, containing 60 massive engraved plates, fundamentally transformed the fields of entomology and botanical illustration by proving that plants and insects share an interconnected, codependent life cycle.
