Giclee reprint of the original by renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, created around 1835–1836, presented with contemporary framing.

Part of his celebrated series Sketches of the Life of the Great Priest, the print illustrates a critical trial in the life of Nichiren (1222–1282), the defiant founder of Nichiren Buddhism, who was exiled to remote Sado Island from 1271 to 1274 after aggressively blaming the Kamakura government's misfortunes on their straying from the Lotus Sutra. Dropped in Tsukahara—a desolate graveyard with only a ruined shrine for shelter—he was intended to succumb to the island's brutal, freezing winters. Instead, Kuniyoshi depicts the monk enduring a fierce snowstorm with unyielding spiritual resilience; a historical endurance test, as it was during this grueling exile that Nichiren ultimately authored his most influential theological treatises and solidified his religious movement before his eventual pardon.
