Baird’s Tapir

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Volume I of Biologia Centrali-America, published in London in 1889.

The Biologia Centrali-Americana (1879–1915) is a 63-volume encyclopedia documenting the natural history and archaeology of Mexico and Central America. Edited by British naturalists Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin, the series contains descriptions and illustrations covering zoology, botany, and archaeology.

This detailed zoological plate of Tapirus dowi (Baird's tapir/Dow's tapir) was lithographed by the Dutch artist John Gerrard Keulemans. Published between 1879 and 1882 under the direction of authors Edward Richard Alston and Thomas de Gray (Lord Walsingham), the plate illustrates the large mammal in a side-profile view within a natural landscape. The illustration provides an anatomical reference for the species, capturing its distinct snout and physical proportions
