Salamanders- Various Newts

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from Volume III of Charles-Lucien’s Bonaparte's Iconografia della fauna italica published in Rome in 1832.

Bonaparte (1803–1857) was a world-renowned French naturalist, ornithologist, and the nephew of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The book was a milestone initiative aimed at providing the first highly rigorous, illustrated inventory of Italy's entire vertebrate biodiversity. Published in 3 large folio volumes, it contains comprehensive scientific descriptions alongside 179 finely detailed lithographic plates.

Established by Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in 1768, Triton was used for decades to classify European crested and semi-aquatic newts. Because the name Triton was already technically occupied by a mollusk, herpetologists replaced it. Today, these amphibians belong to the genus Triturus
