Black-throated Brilliant Hummingbird – John Gould
Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from John Gould’s A monograph of the Trochilidae, or family of humming-birds, published in London between 1849 and 1861.
John Gould’s A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds (1849–1861) is widely considered his ultimate masterwork and the pinnacle of 19th-century ornithological illustration.
Today, ornithologists classify this bird as Heliodoxa schreibersii. It lives in the understory and borders of humid lowland and foothill forests across the western Amazon basin, covering parts of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and northwestern Brazil. It is a large, aggressive hummingbird that actively defends rich nectar sources, particularly feeding on the tubular flowers of forest shrubs and epiphytes.
