340-cassowary-copy
Greater Bird of Paradise

Giclee reprint of an original drawing from the Natural History Paper Museum (historically compiled under the title Historia Naturalis) of Emperor Rudolf II. It was commissioned between 1596 and 1610 by the Holy Roman Emperor in Prague. Overseen by Rudolf's court physician and celebrated naturalist, Anselmus de Boodt, this unique "paper museum" served as a comprehensive, visual theater of the world's known zoology and botany. It bound together roughly 750 highly finished, exquisite watercolors depicting everything from common European wildlife to exotic species imported from Africa and the Americas—such as porcupines, pineapples, and even the now-extinct Dodo bird.

This illustration depicts a male greater bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda). Hand-painted between 1596 and 1610 by Flemish naturalist Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt for Emperor Rudolf II, the artwork captures the signature maroon plumage, pale yellow crown, and long cascading flank plumes that define the species. De Boodt inscribed the historic name "Avis paradisi. Manucodiata," which early European naturalists used exclusively to describe this specific bird. Because native traders of the era prepared trade skins by removing the feet and legs, early scholars mistakenly believed these creatures lived entirely in the air—a myth directly addressed in the handwritten notes at the bottom of the page, and one that famously inspired Carl Linnaeus to formally give the bird the scientific name apoda, meaning "footless".
