Southern Cassowary

Giclee reprint of an original lithograph from La galerie des oiseaux, a foundational, two-volume ornithological treatise published in Paris between 1820 and 1826 (commonly cited as 1825) by the pioneering French ornithologist Louis-Pierre Vieillot in collaboration with curator Paul-Louis Oudart.

Conceived as a comprehensive systematic catalog of the expansive avian collections housed within the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, the work is celebrated for introducing numerous newly discovered bird species and establishing critical modern taxonomic classifications. The monumental publication features over 300 exquisite plates, mostly drawn from nature by Oudart. These illustrations were produced using fine line engraving or lithography and finished with meticulous, vibrant hand-applied watercolor. Highly prized in the rare book and antiquarian print market today, Vieillot's Galerie stands alongside the works of Audubon and Gould as a masterwork of 19th-century scientific illustration, perfectly marrying artistic beauty with rigorous empirical observation.

This plate features "Le Casoar casqué / Casuarius galeatus", known today as the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius). The historical specific name galeatus stems from the Latin word for "helmeted," referring to the bird's prominent horn-like casque.
